In last week’s post, I shared what it means to be a modern mystic — someone who walks the line between the seen and unseen, blending intuition, curiosity, and uncovered inner truth. If that resonated with you, then welcome deeper in.
When I was first starting out on my spiritual journey, I remember feeling both fascinated and totally overwhelmed. There was so much out there — crystals, chakras, energy healing, past lives, soul contracts — and I wasn’t sure where to begin. In today’s post, we’ll remedy some of that concern for you by covering the best spiritual books for beginners. We’ll be going over my top 5 picks, plus, an added bonus at the end!
These five books on different aspects of the metaphysical were my gateway of sorts. They still sit on my bookshelf to this day. Each one opened a different door for me, shifted my perspective, and helped me build a spiritual foundation that still supports me and my practice in the present.
Even more exciting, these are all super affordable additions to your metaphysical bookshelf! Whether you browse and pick just one for now or go all out and snag them all today, I hope these eye-opening reads guide you in the same way they guided me when I was starting my spiritual journey.
Oh, and don’t forget, just like all our blog-posts, you can always bookmark this page for later reference!

No. 2 – You Are Psychic: 7 Steps to Discover Your Own Psychic Abilities by Char Margolis
You Are Psychic was a turning point in helping me acknowledge the psychic intuition I’d been brushing off most of my early life. Char Margolis writes with warmth, clarity, and the kind of grounded belief that gently pulls you into your own power. She gives tangible exercises and real-life examples that make the concept of psychic ability feel less abstract and more like a muscle you can stretch and strengthen over time.
Heads Up: There is some spiritual language rooted in Christianity utilized throughout the book. So if that’s a sensitive area for you, just know you can take what resonates and leave what doesn’t. I will say, however, that Char is very open-minded in the book about other walks of faith and ways of thought. She states clearly that she just uses the language and systems that come most naturally to her, and encourages her readers to do the same.
- A compassionate, practical guide to developing your intuition.
- 224 Pages (Page-Turner)
- Full of fun anecdotes from Char’s life as a celebrity psychic
- Foreword by Chris Colfer (from Glee)
- Add the Hardcover to Your Bookshelf 📚
- Also Available on Kindle 📱
No. 3 – The Modern Guide to Witchcraft: Your Complete Guide to Witches, Covens, and Spells by Skye Alexander
This was the very first metaphysical book I ever bought — and honestly? It still holds up. It’s sometimes dismissed as “intro fluff,” but that’s part of its charm. In The Modern Guide to Witchcraft, Skye Alexander makes magic feel inviting, practical, and personal. This quick read is jam-packed with intros to the basics on all areas of witchy interest. It’s broken down into easy-to-browse sections and offers a ton of information on the fundamentals of witchcraft and personal magic.
Bonus: The back half of the book includes beginner spells that are fun to experiment with, even if you’re still skeptical. Whether you identify as a witch or not, this book offers a grounded way to explore personal power, intention, and connection to the natural world.
- The perfect “starter grimoire” for curious minds.

No. 4 – The Witch’s Garden: Plants in Folklore, Magic and Traditional Medicine by Sandra Lawrence
If you’ve ever wanted to connect more deeply with plants, nature, and the old magical traditions that surround them, The Witch’s Garden is a beautiful place to begin. This book really deepened my understanding and respect for plants, their unique energies, and their uses in folk-magic. It reads like part botanical encyclopedia, part folklore compendium, and part grimoire.
You’ll learn the symbolic, spiritual, and medicinal uses of common (and not-so-common) plants — all steeped in centuries of lore. Plus, it’s gorgeous! A true coffee table treasure that invites you to explore plant magic at your own pace.
- Herbal wisdom meets mystical plant lore.
- 208 Pages (Includes a helpful Index in the back)
- Covers the history of herbology in folklore and folkmagic
- Stunning cover and beautiful images used throughout
- Add the Hardcover to Your Bookshelf 📚

EDIT / BONUS TITLE: Since posting, I’ve also discovered the companion book for this title, The Witch’s Forest by Sandra Lawrence. This companion book in the same series covers the presence and power of trees in magic, folklore, and traditional remedies. The hardcover is a steal, but there’s also a Kindle version! I haven’t read this one yet, but I’m definitely adding it to my shopping cart and snatching it up as soon as possible.
